Here’s a really easy way to paint for Halloween – do some pumpkin sponge painting! The best part about making these stamps is that they are completely reusable. And they are much more economical than buying your own too!

Make Your Own Pumpkin Sponge Stamps
Making these pumpkin sponge stamps is a fun afternoon activity. Kids can design their own or you can use our free printable template.
Have fun painting with these sponge stamps to make some simple pumpkin art. These are great for toddlers and preschoolers to use! You can even stamp on some cards or wrapping paper!
As an alternative you can use sponge pieces to dab paint to create a pumpkin shape. Or slice an old apple or potato in half and you can stamp with one of those too!
Supplies to Make Your Own Sponge Pumpkin Stamps
- Plain Sponges – you want sponges that do not have any scrubbers on them so they are easier to cut. Ones like these.
- Strong Scissors – cutting sponges can be difficult. You’ll need heavy duty scissors to cut them. Adults only should do this part.
- White Cardstock – we like to use 12×12 white cardstock since it’s a bigger area for kids to stamp on
- Colored Cardstock – for the pumpkin facial features, stem and vine
- Paper Plate or Plate (for stamping the sponges in with the paint)
- Glue – a glue stick or regular white glue will work well
- Pumpkin Template – you can get the free printable templates at the bottom of the post

Directions for Pumpkin Sponge Painting
1. First print off the free template.
You can get the free printable templates at the bottom of the post.
You can also draw your own pumpkin facial features and cut those out.
2. Cut out the pumpkin template and place on your sponge.
3. Trace around the template with a sharpie or marker.
4. Make a few different sponges if you want to paint with different colors.
Or you can even draw your own shapes to make different sizes of pumpkins!
5. Now cut out your pumpkins from the sponge.Â
Cutting can be difficult if you do not have heavy-duty scissors depending on how thick your sponges are. We recommend using a pair of scissors like these. Adults only should do the cutting.
It can be hard to get round shapes when cutting the sponges, but don’t worry too much about making it perfect. Once the shape is cut out you can go back and round out the edges with the scissors.
Do this for the side that will be stamped down.
6. Now have fun using your stamps!
I like to use 12 x 12 white cardstock because the sheets are bigger so you can add more stamps to them.
Add some orange paint to a paper plate. Dip the sponge into the paint making sure that all of the sponge is covered in paint. Stamp on your paper. If you have some parts of the pumpkin missing paint you can touch it up later with a paintbrush if needed.
7. To add the pumpkin facial features, trace around the template on black cardstock.
You can also use markers or paint and draw them on once the orange paint has dried.
Another option is to use some black fabric puffy paint. This puffy paint would give the pumpkins a fun 3D effect.
8. Wrap a rectangular piece of green cardstock around a pencil and glue it to the top of your pumpkins for the vine.
Add a stem by tracing around the template on brown cardstock.
Glue the stem and vine to the tops of your pumpkins.
Once you’re done with your sponges, rinse off the paint and they can be reused again and again!
